Cote Rotie
Maison Rouge 2003 - Domaine Georges Vernay

vernay_bottlevernay_5"Internationally recognized for its Condrieu white wines, this estate has seen Christine Vernay (right) since 1997 imprinting her father Georges' style on the reds as well. She created the Côte-Rôtie "Maison Rouge", a full expression of an exceptional terroir with a granite-rich soil and a dizzyingly impressive steepness, even greater than that of their famous "Coteau de Vernon". Fine, elegant, and harmonious are clearly the words coming to mind when we tasted this beautiful wine. In a particularly hot vintage, this 100% Syrah is a delicate, stylish and structured wine. A dark ruby purple, rather full-bodied, this wine has delicious aromas of roasted vanilla, cigar box and oriental spices. With layers of streamlined mineral and red currant, it expresses both perfume and power with silky tannins, very attractive on the palate. Outstanding aging potential."

Champagne Louis XV 1995
De Venoge

"In celebration of the ‘founder' of Champagne, Epernay based Champagne house de Venoge, recently released their 1995 prestige cuvée ‘Louis XV'. Produced in very limited quantities, this champagne has aged 10 years down in the chalk cellars. The finesse of the bubbles and their uniform distribution of bead enhance the colour of the wine with flashes of incandescent yellow gold. Elegant and sophisticated, the nose shows subtle lemon and nut aromas. On the palate, the wine reveals a contradiction of flavours, fine but intense, bold yet demure. This vintage champagne, which still needs ageing in your cellar, is extremely rich and long with aromas of dried peach and apricot."

Pouilly Fumé Haute Densité 2005
Château de Tracy

"One of the most famous estates in the Loire, Château de Tracy is only producing Pouilly Fumé wines which include this rare top cuvée. They are very highly regarded, especially after a long ageing (the vintage 1996 is absolutely superb today). Very young, this Pouilly Fumé needs aeration to show complex aromas tending towards fruit (citrus, white peach) followed by mineral notes. On the palate, it is rich, mouth-filling and well balanced, with a wonderfully persistent aromatic finesse. The nice creamy finish and the subtle minerality make this wine very promising."

Chateau Musar 1979 - Gaston Hochar

musar_web_2 "Located at 1000 metres altitude in the fertile plain of Bekaa (Lebanon), the vineyard of Château Musar is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault. A red Château Musar is usually characterized by its complexity and plenitude, the result of long ageing (7 years) prior to release. Powerful and balanced, this red wine achieves full potential after 15 years. The 1979 vintage shows a beautiful light and evolved colour, the wine plays on a ‘sweet and salt' register in an atmosphere of the ‘Thousand and One Nights'. On the nose, an explosion of oriental spices, mixed with rose perfumes, jasmine and gamey notes. The palate is smooth, showing a silky and delicate body with melted tannins and beautiful balance. The complexity comes thereafter, with a long and spicy finish. Shrouded in subtlety, this very high-class wine invites a long and thoughtful meditation."

Note from David Eley: I was introduced to this astonishing wine by Guillaume Jourdan during a splendid luncheon early this summer. We were a group of four and only Guillaume knew the identity of the bottle, suffice to say, we were all convinced of its 'noble French origins' and when its true middle eastern identity was revealed, were stunned. The 79' Musar put me in mind of a fine piece of elegant and gently faded antique furniture, with a beautiful patina. The palate was beguiling and lingered, on the tastebuds and in the memory.
